Peter Mullan (Glasgow, 1959) già all'età di diciannove anni mostra interesse per la regia, realizzando alcuni cortometraggi. Non riuscendo però a entrare alla National Film School, decide di darsi alla recitazione. Debutta come attore teatrale nel 1988 per passare poi a cinema e televisione. Diviene famoso grazie a film come Riff-Raff (1991) di Ken Loach, Braveheart (1995) di Mel Gibson, Trainspotting (1995) di Danny Boyle, ma soprattutto grazie alla Palma d'oro come miglior attore protagonista vinta nel 1998 per My name is Joe, ancora di Loach. The Magdalene Sisters è il suo secondo lungometraggio come regista. Ha diretto anche alcuni episodi di "Cardiac Arrest", serie Tv della BBC che gli ha valso una nomination come Migliore regista alla Royal Television Society.

As he wasn't admitted to the National Film School, he decided to dedicate himself to acting, and made his debut in the theatre in 1988 before moving to cinema and television. Fame came with the parts he played in such films as Riff-Raff (1991) by Ken Loach, Braveheart (1995) by Mel Gibson and Trainspotting (1995) by Danny Boyle, but above all with the Palme D'Or he won for best leading actor in 1998 for My name is Joe, once again by Loach. The Magdalene Sisters is the second feature-lenght film he has directed. He also directed a few episodes of BBC Tv-series "Cardiac Arrest", which earned him a best director nomination from Royal Television Society.
